The following are the steps provided in order to obtain your teenage TIP (Temporary Instruction Permit) card.

1. Age Requirement

    •    Must be at least 14 years & 9 months old to apply.
    •    Can enroll in Driver’s Ed at 15.

2. Go to the OMV (Office of Motor Vehicles)

Bring these documents:
    •    Original or state-certified birth certificate (no photocopies).
    •    Social Security card.
    •    School enrollment/attendance form (if under 18).
    •    Parent/guardian with valid ID (must sign consent).

3. Apply for TIP

    •    Complete application at OMV.
    •    Pay the $32.25 TIP fee (plus local fees).
    •    Take a vision test at the OMV.

4. Use of TIP

    •    The TIP allows you to participate in a Driver’s Ed course (classroom & behind-the-wheel).
    •    You may drive only with your driving instructor during lessons, or a licensed adult (21+) / sibling (18+) when practicing.

5. Retain TIP Until Course Completion

    •    Keep your TIP card safe — bring it to every class and driving session.
    •    If lost/damaged, you must get a replacement from OMV before continuing lessons.
    •    TIP is valid for 1 year and does not renew.

6. After Driver’s Ed Completion

    •    Return to the OMV with your course completion certificate.
    •    Exchange your TIP for a Learner’s Permit (if under 17) or a full license (depending on age and completion).

Quick Louisiana Teen Reminder

    •    No TIP = No Driver’s Ed.
    •    Always carry your TIP while driving.
    •    Protect it like your school ID or debit card.
